Helping your child with spelling:
The level of words that children are expected to learn to spell has increased significantly since the introduction of the 2014 primary curriculum. Our research has shown that children do not all learn to spell in the same way. Research carried out by our English team has shown that a range of approaches, tailored to each individual child's learning style is most effective.
At Warden House, we use a "Word Study" approach to the teaching of spelling across the school. The different word patterns that we expect children to learn can be found in the spelling overview document for years 2 - 6. Spellings in year 1 are taught through the extension of the Little Wandle structures and curriculum, further information on this can be found in the phonics section of the website.
Please click here to view a guidance leaflet from www.wordstudyspelling.com that illustrates our approach to the teaching of spelling. Also, see the image below that shows some of the spelling strategies that children can use.
The "Spelling Menu" below highlights many of the different strategies that the children can use in order to learn their spellings at home and at school.
