Reading Comprehension
Reading comprehension is the understanding of what has been read. At Warden House, we use VIPERS questions to ensure we teach the 6 areas of reading which are covered in the primary curriculum.
The different areas are as follows:
KS1
Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explain, Retrieval, Sequence
KS2
Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explain, Retrieval, Summarise
These posters from the Literacy Shed give you an idea of questions which can be used to target each area. When reading with your child at home, it’s good to target questions from each of the areas to ensure your child understands the text they have read as well as enjoying discussing the text with you.
Choosing 3 or 4 questions each time you read and spending a few minutes discussing the text before, during or after reading with them, will support your child’s comprehension development.
